History

In the 1960's, soda fountains were refilled similarly to the way propane stations are filled. A fully carbonated ready to drink batch of soda know as a premix was transferred into large tanks and distributed under pressure.

Carbonation tester

At the soda plant, a quality control manager would periodically check the carbonation level on one or more of the 5 gallon pressurized tanks before they were sent out by truck to refill a soda fountain. An antique manual soda tester from that era is shown here.
